Summer Healing Series Week 2: When Your Partner Is Angry

Dear Reader,

Conflict is a normal part of every relationship.

But when your partner is angry, frustrated, or emotionally overwhelmed, it's easy to get pulled into the storm with them.

What starts as a simple disagreement can quickly become two people reacting from hurt instead of responding from love.

As part of our Summer Healing Series on Family, let's talk about emotional regulation and healthy communication.

Here are 4 tips when speaking to a partner who is angry:

  1. Regulate yourself first.
Before responding, take a slow breath. Relax your shoulders. Notice your body's reaction. If you become emotionally flooded, the conversation often escalates.
  2. Listen to understand, not to prepare your defense.
Many people listen while mentally crafting their next response. Instead, focus on what your partner is actually trying to communicate beneath the anger.
  3. Validate feelings without agreeing with behavior.
    You can say:
"I can see you're really frustrated."
    "That sounds upsetting."
Validation helps people feel heard and often lowers emotional intensity.
  4. Take a pause when needed.
If emotions are too high, it's okay to say:
"I want to continue this conversation when we're both calmer."
A short break can prevent words that damage trust.

Emotional regulation isn't about suppressing feelings.

It's about creating enough space between the trigger and the response so you can choose how you want to show up.

What many people don't realize is that relationship conflicts often activate old emotional wounds. Childhood experiences, past heartbreaks, family dynamics, and trapped emotions can all influence how we react in the present.

Sometimes the argument isn't really about the dishes, the text message, or the forgotten errand.

It's about an old feeling of rejection, abandonment, criticism, or not being valued.

When those deeper emotional roots are released, communication often becomes easier, calmer, and more connected.

This summer, don't just manage relationship triggers—heal what's underneath them.

Hi Reader, One of the biggest myths about emotional pain is this: “I’ll deal with it when I have time to really work through it.” But what if healing isn’t about time? What if it’s about what’s already stored in your body? Trapped emotions don’t wait for a convenient moment. They settle in — quietly shaping how you feel, how you react, how you show up in your relationships. Think about it. If working harder on yourself automatically created peace… Every person who’s read every self-help book...

Dear Reader, As we wrap up our June Summer Healing Series on Family, I want to leave you with one powerful reminder: Conflict isn’t the enemy. How we respond to conflict is what shapes our relationships. Every disagreement gives us a choice. Will we react from old wounds… or respond from healing? Many of us learned unhealthy ways of handling conflict without realizing it. Maybe you learned to avoid difficult conversations. Maybe you shut down to protect yourself. Maybe you raised your voice...

Dear Reader, Summer has a way of bringing family to the surface. Cookouts.Vacations.More time together.More memories.More triggers. And sometimes… more exhaustion you can’t explain. That’s why starting May 31st, I’m beginning a weekly Summer Healing Series focused on FAMILY — the emotional patterns, inherited burdens, and hidden stress stored beneath the surface of everyday life. Because not every emotion you carry started with you. Some people grew up learning:“Stay quiet.”“Don’t cry.”“Keep...
