Your body can’t tell the difference

Hi Reader,

I remember opening an email from an angry client and feeling my whole body react before I’d even finished reading it.

Heart pounding. Jaw tight. Stomach in knots.

It was just an email. Words on a screen. No physical threat anywhere near me.

But my body didn’t know that.

It responded exactly the way it would have responded to real, immediate danger — because as far as my nervous system was concerned, there was no difference.

Has an unexpected bill ever made your chest tighten before you’d even opened it?

Has a call from an unknown number ever sent your heart racing, some part of you already bracing for bad news?

Can you remember the last time a single email, a single voicemail, a single unpaid invoice sent your body into full alert — long after the moment itself had passed?

Here’s what most of us were never taught:

Your nervous system cannot tell the difference between an angry client and an actual threat to your life.

And this is the part modern wellness culture keeps missing.

We’re told to manage our stress. Breathe through it. Think positive. Reframe the situation.

But cortisol doesn’t respond to reframing. It responds to survival.

When your body perceives threat — whether that threat is a saber-toothed tiger or an unpaid bill sitting in your inbox — it releases the exact same flood of stress hormones. Cortisol. Adrenaline. Your entire system preparing to fight, flee, or freeze.

Your ancestors’ bodies were built for physical threats that resolved quickly. Run from the danger. Survive it. Return to calm.

But modern stressors don’t resolve quickly. The angry client doesn’t disappear in five minutes. The unpaid bill doesn’t vanish once you’ve felt the fear. The collector calls again next week.

So the cortisol keeps spiking. And spiking. And spiking.

Until your body is living in a near-constant state of alert — and you’ve simply learned to call it “being busy” or “having a lot on my plate.”

It’s not busyness.

It’s a nervous system that never got the signal it was safe to stand down.

I used to think stress was something I needed to manage better. Organize my way out of. Think my way through.

What I actually needed was for my body to learn — at a cellular level — that it was safe.

That’s not something a planner or a productivity app can teach you.

That’s nervous system work. That’s body-level release.

That’s exactly what happens in an Emotion Code® session.

We find where that chronic stress response is being held — often trapped emotions from stressful seasons, financial fear, or moments your body never fully recovered from — and we release them.

Not by managing your calendar differently.

By finally letting your body exhale.

If your body has been living on high alert — waiting for the next email, the next bill, the next hard conversation — that exhaustion is real.

And it doesn’t have to be permanent.

Your first step is just a conversation. Call or text me. 🤍

With care, Conni

P.S. Your initial session is 45 minutes — just the two of us. Book 3 or more sessions and you’ll save on every one. Reach out whenever you’re ready.

I help people who feel stuck in the same emotional patterns even after doing "the work" — therapy, coaching, inner healing, you name it. Their mind understands the story. Their body hasn't let go yet.Through Emotion Code®, Body Code®, EFT, and mind-body work, I help them find what's actually still trapped — the emotions their body is still carrying — so the shift finally reaches past insight and into how they feel, day to day.

Hi Reader, There was a season in my life where I realized I hadn’t cried in years. Not because everything was fine. But because somewhere along the way, I’d stopped fully feeling things at all. I could talk about hard moments in my life with a strange kind of distance — like I was describing something that happened to someone else. At the time I thought I was just “handling it well.” I didn’t yet understand what my body had actually done. Have you ever noticed yourself going through the...

Hi Reader, One of the biggest myths about emotional pain is this: “I’ll deal with it when I have time to really work through it.” But what if healing isn’t about time? What if it’s about what’s already stored in your body? Trapped emotions don’t wait for a convenient moment. They settle in — quietly shaping how you feel, how you react, how you show up in your relationships. Think about it. If working harder on yourself automatically created peace… Every person who’s read every self-help book...

Dear Reader, As we wrap up our June Summer Healing Series on Family, I want to leave you with one powerful reminder: Conflict isn’t the enemy. How we respond to conflict is what shapes our relationships. Every disagreement gives us a choice. Will we react from old wounds… or respond from healing? Many of us learned unhealthy ways of handling conflict without realizing it. Maybe you learned to avoid difficult conversations. Maybe you shut down to protect yourself. Maybe you raised your voice...
